Hehe great question! Sort of! A PhD has to be made up of entirely new work so I need to discover things to write my thesis. And the more exciting stuff the better, of course!
Also the measured output of a scientist is academic papers written about their work. The more papers you write, the ‘better’ scientist you are, but you can only write papers about new stuff, so discovering new things is really important to us!
As I’m early in my career, I’m really learning how to properly get results, and how to present them in scientific papers – a lot of it is practice at this point, so there’s not a lot of pressure in that respect. However you only have so many years to do your work – and I’ve only got about a year until I really need to publish my results – so there’s a lot more pressure for things like deadlines!
