Well my research is different in a way because a lot of the experiments I do is on data that the Cassini spacecraft has already measured. Cassini has been orbitting Saturn since 2004 so there is lots of data to play with!
However, if I see something interesting in past data and I want to prove it using new data I might be in for a long wait. The orbit of Cassini is well planned so if I want to look at a specific moon then I have to wait for the next flyby of that moon. That could mean I have to wait for months or even years! I have to just do something else in the meantime otherwise I would waste a lot of time.
Sometimes if I’m running a computer simulation, or if I’m getting a computer to analyse data, I have big chunks of free time – usually in this time I’m doing other tasks, perhaps teaching students or writing reports – there’s usually always something to do! Right now I’m actually waiting for some data from my computer, so I can spend time on here answering questions!
Not really, it’s more anticipation than boredom! It can be boring though if you’ve spent 8 hours waiting for an experiment to be set up… I’m not going to claim it’s all fun and games but it’s a great feeling when you get the results that you want!
