I try to make sure I have plenty of spare time. When I was doing my PhD it was quite difficult to find spare time as I was also running a program taking science shows into schools, so whenever I wasn’t working on one I was doing the other!
Now, though, i try to work 9-5 (maybe a bit longer) and enjoy my weekends and evenings like a ‘normal’ person!

Hehehe well being a scientist is good because the hours are pretty flexible so if you need more time to do something or to work from home you can, as long as you get the work done. This also means its hard to ‘switch off’ so on the weekend etc you still think about work. At the beginning of my PhD I tried to do ‘normal’ hours ie 9-5 Monday-Friday but now I’m working as much as I can, even if that means in front of the TV on a Saturday night! That is coz I’m in my PhD final year, it might be better once I’m a doctor!

It really varies from day to day – soem days I’m busy from 9am in the morning until 9pm at night looking at data or working on presentations. Most days however I generally work the normal hours that most people do from 9 – 5. I don’t usually work at weekends unless I am abroad working on an experiment, but that’s not very often either – so I have enough time to enjoy other things like spending time with friends, going to concerts and playing on my xbox!
