Hi there, in the picture the thing in front of me is a Plasma Ball. They were invented by Nikola Tesla, who was an awesome scientist! It is filled with a gas and has a high frequency voltage at the centre, as the voltage goes up and down the gas breaks down and forms these plasma lines. If you touch it or put your nose on it (like I am in the pic) it changes the electric field so that the lines go toward whatever is touching it.
They are heaps of fun, you can buy them for about £20!
