  I don’t have the definitive answer to that, but I can give you my viewpoint! In research science, accurate report of results is very important, especially for credibility – fabrication of results can lead to the stripping of titles and more serious charges. Now either Fleischmann and Pons were bad scientists in that they didn’t repeat their experiments in order to confirm their results, or they were looking for media attention – the latter seems unlikely considering at some point they were probably going to have to replicate their results, especially as this was looked at as a viable means of alternative energy production. I personally think this was bad science; that Fleischmann and Pons saw something and twisted the result to fit their goal, rather than to draw a conclusion from the results.
