I design machines called particle accelerators. Most of the time that means I’m either doing some calculations (pencil & paper style!), writing some computer code (I use a Mac – and love it!) or waiting for simulations to run to tell me if the machine I’ve designed ought to work or not.
I also spend a bit of time helping to run a real accelerator (it’s name is EMMA!) which we’re just getting running at the moment. I helped to design it so it’s a great feeling that I now get to play with it and do some real hands-on work. If I’m running it I’m often on shift at strange hours, often until past midnight. I stay in a hotel near the lab if that happens!

I’m a Nuclear Physicist – I study the reactions to occur in stars, and on the surface of really hot stars; the goal of my research is to find out why stars produce as much energy as they do!
