For my degree I went to the University of Melbourne in Australia. There were a few unis to choose from, but my decision was based on what courses were offered and where the uni was.

My other options were closer to ‘home’ but I had planned to move out of my parents’ house anyway, so I wanted somewhere in the city where there was lots of stuff going on and easy to get around – so I chose Melbourne because it was in the city. I’m glad I did as I had a great time at uni! I’m not sure how this translates in the UK though, as there are lots of big cities and towns with Universities outside London!

In the UK I went to Oxford to do my PhD. My decision there was based on their research and the reputation of the university. Oxford is obviously very well renowned and they also have the biggest particle physics department in the UK – and I’d met some people from there who really recommended it. It was a pretty easy decision really!

I went to the University of York to do my degree, and I’m still here! I loved the campus when I came to see it on an open day; everyone I met was very friendly and helpful! I also looked at the Times Newspaper’s review of all of the universities for Physics, and York scored on the same level as Oxford and Cambridge, and was the Times University of the year in 2003 (And it was again last year!)

I you’re planning on going to university, I really recommend going to visit them – you’ll know in your heart which one is for you!

      University of Manchester because:
      1) it was good for physics
      2) it was a city
      3) there were lots of students
      4) there is loads to do there
      5) i am from london but wanted to move away from london, but go to another city
      6) it is cheaper than london
      7) they offered me good grades and didnt mind me deferring entry so i could have a gap year

I went to Cardiff University for my degree. It was based on a few things. They offered an astrophysics course and were pretty well regarded when I asked around. When we visited for the open day I really liked the city and the student accommodation was excellent. I just got a good vibe from the place and it was a good fit for me personally – I had come from Birmingham and it put me 2 hours from home. Far enough to feel like I was getting away and on my own, but not too far.
