Good question! We know so little about life, the universe and everything…some nights I just lie in bed thinking about it all. Don’t you think it’s amazing that we can build super complex machines that can allow us to fly, go into space…even talk to someone instantly on the other side of the planet? Who knows what science will bring us in the next one-hundred years…cures for dieseases maybe, new ways to produce electricity without harming our environment…the possibilities are endless! My job is just one tiny piece of the jigsaw of science, but with all of us scientists working together we can really achieve some amazing things! That is why I do the job I do!

It’s fun! I like learning new things and in my work I get to meet lots of interesting people – mostly scientists. Also, anyone can like science and ask scientific questions – its easy to be a scientist and not be one professionally – it’s accessible to all.

I do the job I do because I find the work interesting and rewarding. I think that my work will be able to improve people’s lives in the future, whether because of a new machine for cancer treatment or a new form of safe nuclear power. That is enough motivation for me!

Essentially I chose this path because I want to be an astronaut! The PhD/academic route is just one way of getting there. I sometimes wish I chosen a different path, like something that helps mankind more obviously, like a doctor or a vet, but then you tell ppl what you do and they are soooo excited that it makes it all worth while 😀
